About Us

At Sweet Steps Learning Centre, our educators are professionals who are advocates for early childhood education. We are passionate, supportive and responsive to all children and families, building positive relationships with all children to allow them to develop a sense of independence.

We provide and promote equal opportunities for all children, whereby no child is discriminated against on grounds of class, gender, race, religion, ability or additional needs.

Sweet Steps employs a director with 20 years of working experience in an early childhood environment and who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Family Relations and Child Development. We employ teachers with Certificate III in Children’s Service or related fields in Early Childhood Education and employ teaching assistance as needed, who must have at least a high school degree and experience in early childhood care.

We hold high expectations for all children’s learning and are committed to the principles, practices and outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework. We aim to provide all children in our care with the best start in life to create a better future for the nation. Give your child the right start. We have the facilities and commitment to a high quality of education at an affordable price:

Within the first 4 months of my daughter attending Sweet Steps Learning Centre, she has shown great progress. She can now enunciates words and names which makes me as a parent ecstatic. Her speech was something I was concerned about in the beginning but I am thankful for Ms. Ruth and her patience, I can now hold a tiny conversation with my daughter close to my heart. Thank you Sweet Steps Learning Centre for the foundation you create for every child.

Philosophy

Sweet Steps Learning Centre is committed to meeting the developmental needs of all young children. The theoretical framework of Erickson, Piaget and Vygotsky provide the guide around the curriculum, which is designed to facilitate each child’s social, emotional, physical, language and cognitive development.

The program’s philosophy is based on the following concepts:

  • Providing a nurturing “home-like” environment where all children feel a sense of belonging

  • Providing a safe, hygienic, aesthetically pleasing environment

  • Valuing the uniqueness of each child. No two are the same, each having individual needs, developing in their own unique ways at their own pace

  • Children construct their understanding of their world through active involvement and interaction with people and material.

  • Play, exploration and experimentation are the major vehicles for learning

  • Children benefit from making choices in a stimulating and age appropriate environment

  • Children learn best in an environment which promotes acceptance, trust, initiative and decision-making

My son has been at Sweet Steps for 3 years and he absolutely loves going to school now. Sweet Steps is a lovely school, with great facilities and a clean and safe environment. His teachers are amazing and I know my child is treated with careened encouraged to be himself. I find that being a smaller school the most, allows for a personal connection with teachers. The teachers are great about sharing my child’s achievements or struggles on a daily basis. That allows me to celebrate his achievements or to help him with any challenges in a timely manner. This makes me feel included in miseducation, and is also a great way to bond with him.

I find the student to teacher ratio is excellent. The teachers are able to spend quality time with each student and tailor the learning experience appropriately. I love that my son is always challenged but in a fun way, so that he finds it enjoyable. Sweet Steps has been the perfect start to my sons education and I would highly recommend them.

Curriculum

Sweet Steps Learning Centre offers a comprehensive curriculum that supports and enhances all areas of children’s development: social-emotional, intellectual, language and physical. Based on the belief that children learn best through play, the curriculum reflects the guidelines established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in its “Developmentally Appropriate Practice Position Statement”.

The curriculum for each child is based on a partnership between families/parents and teachers. Families/parents and teachers use both formal and informal means of gathering information about the children’s interests, needs and assessing each child’s skills and knowledge. With this information, families/parents and teachers set goals for each child. Modifications are made to the curriculum to support all children’s learning opportunities, including those who live with a disability or who have special needs.

As a new mum, the idea of handing my only child over to other carers and the unfamiliar system of early learning education was horrifying. However, Sweet Steps Learning Centre is second to none. My daughter thrived socially, cognitively and emotionally, and her relationship with her peers and teachers was evident in her everyday interactions with them. We no longer live in PNG, and still wish Ms. Ruth, Ms. Margaret, the stand and even the wonderful security team were accessible to us today. Thank you, Stacy and the Sweet Steps Team. You have set the bar incredibly high.
